In this Arlo by NETGEAR Security System you get 3 HD cameras with night vision which can be placed wherever you need to, you get a home base station to connect to the internet. This links to your cameras and also has a small amount of storage. There are 3 magnetic mounts and screws, these can be attached anywhere that can take a screw. You get 12 x CR123 batteries(4 per camera) these last between 4-6 months depending on the camera usage.
How does it work
The base station from the Arlo by NETGEAR Security System is plugged into the electricity and attached to the internet. The base station sync’s to the cameras in the kit so when you need to view the feed or the camera triggers a recording from a movement the base station will hold the recording in it’s memory. The cameras are powered with 4 lithium batteries in a sealed compartment so they can be set up outdoors and cope with any weather.
The cameras can be positioned on the ball of the mount and pointed in most directions. You can set the camera high so you can get a full view of the area you want it to cover. If the camera is out of reach it also keeps it from being able to be moved unless the person has a ladder. If you feel that the white of the camera is a bit visible you can buy silicone skins to put over the camera so that it will blend in with the background better. There are quite a few options for the camera set up and the alerts for which you will need to download the app.
Once you have downloaded the Arlo app you can name the security cameras that you have which makes it easier for you to set parameters for each one. You can view each camera live via the app by pressing the button for live view. The camera doesn’t work all the time to save batteries, it will only give you live view when you request it or it will record a clip if it detects movement.
You can set the sensitivity of the motion detection and you can set the sharpness of the picture. You also have the option to set the length of the clip it records. You have to remember the longer the clips the more battery is used.
There is night illumination for night time view and recordings. If you have your 3 security cameras set up you can view them all live at the same time using the app in your phone, on a tablet or on your computer. You also have the option to set the cameras up with an Alexa device like the Echo Spot or the Echo Show and ask Alexa to show you a specific camera.
Alerts and video storage
Alerts for each of the Arlo security cameras can be set up individually and will send a notifications to your phone or an email alert if any movement is detected. For each alert the camera will record a clip which you can view immediately as it is coming from the base unit. You can then alert authorities if it is an intruder. You have the option to download the clip to your phone or computer to keep and it will automatically be stored onto the cloud storage for up to 7 days for no additional cost.
If you have a lot of videos being created and want to keep them for longer you have the option to buy a larger storage or if you want to have more than 5 cameras for a reasonable monthly cost. If you are viewing live and want to start recording because you see something you have the option to do that from the app. You can also zoom the screen in to see a close up of the view or take a picture.
The buyers love the fact that this system is so easy to set up. It’s easy to set up alerts and rules for if you are away from home and access to the video clips with the app is quick whether checking a clip or checking in on live view. They like the fact that you can share access with friends and family and that you can have up to 5 cameras without any extra cost for video storage.
The most complaints about the Arlo security system is that there are too many false alarms activated by the motion sensor but it also misses bits that you want it to catch. Some people are finding that the batteries don’t last very long, not 4 months as advertised so it is expensive to keep changing them. Although there does seem to be a rechargeable unit and batteries available now.
If you want simplicity and no wiring that you feel you won’t be able to do on your own then you should definitely consider investing in the Arlo by NETGEAR Security System – 3 Wire–Free HD Cameras, the mounts are easy to install and the cameras attach magnetically. The only wired part is the base station which is kept indoors and sync’s with the cameras via the app to control them. You can secure your home on your own with this kit.
